Church News

July 22, 2007 God is good, all the time! He's alive and well at Parkway Baptist. We celebrated Easter with Eddye Sunday & Clifford as guests at our children's party, and we were unusually treated to SNOW that day. Easter Sunday we were blessed by special music, drama, and wonderful messages by our pastor. Vacation Bible School brought smiling faces, Bible stories, crafts, music, and, of course, snow cones. Our last day was a "water day" with slippy slides, water guns, and frozen t-shirts. Attending from Mississippi were Sarah Polson Macoy, daughter of the pastor, and her six children, what a blessing! We caught our breath and prepared for REAP revival with Bro. Herman Cramer preaching and Bro. Ernie Overstreet leading the music. Attendance was great, and so was support from our partnering church, Hillcrest Baptist of Jasper. As we pause to pray, we continue to remember several who are dealing with cancer, and those who are serving in the military. Prayer is also needed for various mission trips this summer including the seventeen folks who are going to the Ukraine July 23-August 8. Excitement is created with programs and activities such as these, but our prayer is that our main objective is to glorify God.
September 1, 2006 Summer at Parkway-We had a very successful Vacation Bible School with the theme "Construction Zone". We averaged 58 during the week, and a highlight was when Mrs. Kim brought her horses to visit and let the students ride. There was lots of fun with Bible stories, music, crafts, and, of course, Snow Cones. On July 4th we had our traditional fish fry with Donnie LeBlanc & crew doing the cooking. Later that month we hosted youth from North Hardin Baptist Church as they stayed in our church for a week and conducted Bible Club each morning in Glenn Oaks Subdivision. In the evenings they conducted Revival services at our church. Theirs is such a talented and mature group of young people! This was the second year for this partnership between these two churches, and this year they brought about thirty folks which was twice as many as last year. On Wednesday evenings during the summer we have had Bible study for our young people using the "I Love Lucy" theme. Colleen Temple led this activity, and she did an excellent job! Summer winds down as we witnessed the baptism of an 82 year old man, adding him to the Parkway family. We look forward to cooler temperatures and turning leaves as we anxiously await what God will do among us this fall.
May 23, 2006 Our spring activities have been exciting and many! The Saturday before Easter, our annual Children's Easter party found lots of candy, prizes, and entertainment by puppeteer Kevin Brown, aka Farmer Brown. Our worship on Easter Sunday started with an early service followed by breakfast, Sunday School, and the 11 o'clock service. Both worship services featured music and drama about the people and events surrounding the crucifixion and ressurection of Jesus. Many were visibly moved, and the Spirit was definitely in the house. The last Saturday in April, Parkway provided the setting for a surprise birthday party for Music Director Wayne West. His family took care of details while he was led to believe the men were serving a Ladies' Tea. Wayne was really caught off guard! The last Sunday in April we welcomed Kenn and Aloha Freeland, NAMB missionaries in Indiana. There was lunch at church so we could visit with the Freelands more. The following Sunday we were treated to a concert by gospel quartets "King's Sons" and "Grounded" with lunch afterward. The next Sunday was Mothers' Day, and we also honored Leah Moss who is graduating from high school as Salutatorian of her class. Again we were treated to lunch at the church. That's right, count them, three Sunday lunches in a row! School will soon be out, and we look forward to many summer activities including Youth Bible study on Wednesdays, Vacation Bible School, and Glenn Oaks Bible Club led by youth from North Hardin Baptist in Silsbee.
January 27, 2006 The new year is off to a very good start at Parkway Baptist. Our new pastor, Bro. Russ Polson and his family joined us this month, and we are very pleased to have them. We welcomed them this past weekend with a dinner and "pounding" of snack foods for the four foster children now living with them. For the first time this year, we had youth participating in Hot Hearts in Beaumont. There were 23 people taking part in the weekend. Another highlight, one that we look forward to each year, was participating in "Sing With One Voice" at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Jasper. There were 17 choirs or individuals joining our voices, multifaith and multicultural. What a special evening! We praise God for what He is doing in our midst and pray that we may be ever faithful in seeking His will and His face.
December 22, 2005 As the time approaches for the celebration of the birth of God's son, our Savior, we find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. May we never allow shopping, giving and getting to overshadow the real meaning of Christmas. Each year the Parkway family participates in the Angel Tree Prison Ministry, buying gifts for children who have incarcerated parents. This year we served 10 families with a total of 15 children. What a joy to see God's hand as these gifts are delivered! Another highlight is our visit to Sinclair Children's Home in Woodville. This year there were 16 adults & children who sang carols, portrayed a live nativity scene, and distributed gifts to the children at Sinclair. Then their children sang to us and we wished each other a Merry Christmas. This is our second year for this outing, and we can't wait until next year!
December 20, 2005 What's happening at Parkway? Quite a bit! Starting with our Homecoming the last weekend in October, we had a wonderful time with the Son Festival. Tony Pangle preached Saturday night, and Bro. Jerry Redkey preached Sunday morning. Each Sunday School Class had a part on the program, and the youth presented a skit. There was good food, fellowship, and renewing acquaintances. Two weeks later, we hosted Paul & Vanessa Cherry for a weekend revival where two adult men gave their hearts to God and came for baptism. While our hearts were being filled with great things, our pastor of almost five years resigned. Showing true Parkway spirit, we carried on with our Christmas Music Program, singing at Hemphill Care Center in the afternoon and again at the church that night. Afterward, we had fellowship and a caroling hay ride. A highlight of this event was the fact that more than twenty young people participated. We praise God for sending new people, especially youth, to our Parkway family.
November 24, 2005 Fall is such a lovely time of year and a good time to plan activities. Two recent weekends found the Parkway family very busy as we celebrated Homecoming the last weekend in October and a weekend with Paul & Vanessa Cherry November 18-20. Homecoming, which we called Son Festival started with the traditional fish fry Saturday evening followed by a time of testimony, singing, and a wonderful skit by our youth. Bro. Tony Pangle from Colmesneil brought the evening message, and we finished with a hay ride through our neighborhood. The weekend ended with regular services Sunday with the message brought by Bro. Jerry Redkey, our Director of Missions, a fellowship meal, and a concert by The Stanleys. New pictures are posted on the website Homecoming page. We caught our breath and welcomed the Cherrys Friday & Saturday evenings and Sunday morning with a Thanksgiving meal at noon, and an afternoon concert finishing the day. God rewarded by leading two adult men to come forward for profession of faith & baptism. He is busy at Parkway Baptist Church.
October 12, 2005 THE AFTERMATH OF RITA-No one ever expected a hurricane to reach our part of the world. We often receive evacuees from the Gulf Coast who are fleeing from hurricanes, but this time the hurricane came with them. We began housing folks in our homes & church on Sept. 24, and Rita roared through early the next morning. Some of the evacuees stayed until Wed. and the church was a distribution site for ice, water & food until the following Tues. Medical facilities were set up in the brand new Youth Building with A.C. powered by generator. Many marveled at God's timing of having that building in place only a few weeks & the fact that Parkway was the perfect place to serve the community. Community relationships were strengthened as God's people did what God's people are supposed to do.
August 14, 2005 For several months the Parkway family has anticipated the birth of our Baby Kendall. She was born July 18, weighing 5 lb.11 oz. She was welcomed by Mom, Dad, sister Olivia, loving grandparents, and a house full of aunts & uncles. Being the first baby born to a Parkway member makes her very special. The day she was released from the hospital, Grandma Jeniffer was making homemade lasagna for 60 people. Parkway was hosting the bimonthly meeting of Sabine Valley Executive Board. There was a very warm fellowship that evening, and Kendall's presence added a special family touch.
July 11, 2005 What blessings God sent our way last week! We started with a Fish Fry on Monday, July 4th. A group of ten youth & eight adults from North Hardin Baptist Church, Silsbee, came to join us. The young people along with Layton & Rosemary Rogers canvassed Glen Oaks Subdivision and set up canopies at the Ziegler home. They also set up sleeping and cooking arrangements at Parkway Baptist. The men's Sunday School class became a boy's dorm and the women's class became the girl's dorm. Adults staying at night found space in the nursery and other places. Beginning Tuesday morning through Friday, the group, numbering 45-50, gathered in the Ziegler's yard for Bible Study, music, crafts, games and refreshments. There were 23 students enrolled. A final treat on Friday were snow cones enjoyed by all, followed by snow balls flying through the air--not a bad game for a hot Texas day. During the week Parkway youth enjoyed interacting with the youth from Silsbee. On Tuesday 31 youth and 11 adults went for a swim in Rayburn Lake, and Wednesday was pizza night followed by a wonderful presentation by the Silsbee youth. It included singing, drama, and a message from the Bible by one of their young men. A highlight was special music by a quartet of young men from Silsbee. Goodbyes were said on Friday as the group journeyed back to Silsbee leaving behind many snapshots of the week and tons of wonderful memories. Each person involved said we'd do it again next year if God allows.
June 20, 2005 On Sunday, June 19, Wayne West was ordained at Parkway to serve as Deacon. Wayne & his wife Betty have served faithfully at Parkway and other churches & we feel honored that God is choosing to use them in this capacity at our church. Currently Wayne is Music Director & Sunday School Teacher and Betty is Pianist of our church. A new picture of Deacons, Pastor & their wives may be seen on the members page of our web site.
June 11, 2005 We'll start with a report of our recent Vacation Bible School. We had about 20 children attending, 22 teens who studied in class as well as helped in other classes, and about 20 adults helping-we had a 20-20-20 VBS & it was wonderful. We are looking forward to helping in a Bible Club in Glen Oaks Subdivision the week of July 4. A group from North Hardin Baptist in Silsbee will be staying at our church, helping Layton & Rose Mary Rogers & interns Tana Jordan & Heather Jacobson in conducting the Bible Club. We look forward to seeing what God has in store for us that week
